Layering of light

In general, the layering of spatial lighting includes "General/Ambient Lighting", "Task/Focus Lighting", and "Accent Lighting".

General Lighting: This layer is primarily used to accomplish visual tasks by providing enough light, ambient light for safe circulation, or both. Usually provided by overhead equipment. General illumination is usually diffuse and homogeneous.

General lighting can be divided into three categories according to its luminescence: direct lighting, indirect lighting, or some combination of the two. Direct illumination, in which all or almost all of the light is projected downwards into a designated area, can be concentrated or diverged depending on the optics used. It's very energy-efficient, but it poses a risk of direct glare, scalloped patterns on nearby walls, and visible shadows. Indirect lighting is the distribution of all or almost all of the light upwards to the ceiling and nearby walls before reflecting back to a designated area. Indirect lighting provides a very soft distribution of light, which can improve visual comfort, but also runs the risk of making the space look less three-dimensional.

Many lamps on the market, in different terms, emit light in both directions. Generally speaking, 60~90% of the output power of semi-indirect lighting fixtures is projected upward, and only 10~40% of the light is projected downward. The upward and downward projection of direct-indirect illumination is essentially equal. Whereas, 60%~90% of the luminous flux emitted by semi-direct illumination is downward, and 10~40% is upward.

However, typically, these luminaires can be divided into two types: 1) direct/indirect, i.e. emitting more downward light than upward light; 2) Indirect/direct, i.e. more upward light is emitted than downward light. Downlight assemblies can be modeled to provide more efficient focus lighting, while upward-lit lamp assemblies provide diffuse ambient illumination for improved visual comfort.

Ancillary Task Lighting: This layer is primarily used to provide higher light intensity during activities (to point the point of view on an important element or center of activity in the space). It is usually provided by local equipment, such as focus lighting, and there are many types.

Accent Lighting: This floor draws attention by focusing light of a higher relative intensity on important objects, displays, artworks, buildings, and areas. It is usually provided by equipment, such as directional illumination with different beam spreads, that allows precise control over what is being projected. In scenarios where a mobile display is required, such as a retail store, it is advisable to use flexible (aiming and/or moving) lighting. Specific accent lighting technologies form framed, recessed or surface-mounted flood lights, with adjustable blinds, that precisely focus strong light on objects, such as murals.

By controlling these layers separately with different intensities, a variety of scenes can be generated, providing the flexibility to meet a variety of space needs.

The basics of lighting

It's often said that lighting is both an art and a project, but in summary, the art of design is made up of a set of guiding principles. By understanding these principles, electrical distributors demonstrate their expertise and differentiate themselves. In this way, when they communicate with the owner, they can start with the customer's needs (application scenarios) and end with customer satisfaction (equipment sales).
